Mchunu made an impressive debut on July 2007, showing his class and technical boxing skill Mchunu went the full 4 rounds with Hlengwa and became the first person to do so. Mchunu continued his pro journey, which was mostly successful at this point, by fighting 11 fights following his debut. Fights against boxers such as Ruben Groenewald, Soon Botes and Daniel Bruwer followed including once in 2007, 4 times in 2008 and 5 times through 2009, 2010 and 2011.
On September 24th, 2011, Mchunu took on and was defeated by Zack Mwekassa in his first career defeat meaning his career tally went to 10-1-0. Mchunu faced the first defeat of his career against Zack Mwekassa in the 6th round of a 8 round fight via TKO. Mchunu's win streak of 10 rose to 15 following 5 great wins, becoming the 4th person to defeat Eddie Chambers, 4th person to stop Danie Venter (Round 5 KO) and 3rd person to stop Flo Simba (Round 1 TKO).

Garrett Wilson was the next fight for Mchunu on September 20th, 2014 and also his next career win. Mchunu was the 8th person to beat Garrett Wilson where he showed his talent as a technical boxer, beating him over 10 rounds in his 17th professional fight.
On May 16th, 2015, Mchunu took on and was defeated by Ilunga Makabu meaning his career tally went to 17-2-0. Makabu upset Mchunu in a 12 round fight, stopping him in the 11th round and becoming only the 2nd person to stop Mchunu.
The next defeat of Mchunu's career came against Oleksandr Usyk on December 17th, 2016. This took his career record to 17-3-0. A great performance by opponent Usyk added a 3rd stoppage defeat to Mchunu's career. Mchunu was outmatched and the fight was brought to a halt in round 9 via KO.
