Tapia went into his next fight against James Kirkland on December 7th, 2013 with a career record of 20 wins. Kirkland was a push too far for Tapia and after a tough fight Kirkland became the first person to beat and stop Tapia in round 6. Another win followed for Tapia taking his win tally to 21 wins.
Tapia entered his next fight with a mostly successful record of 21-1-0 and took this to 22 wins with a win against Donatas Bondorovas on October 4th, 2014 via TKO. Tapia was the 3rd person to stop Donatas and he did it in the 4th round via TKO. The fight was due to last 10 rounds.
Tapia's next defeat of his career came against David Lemieux on May 7th, 2016. A great performance by opponent Lemieux added a 2nd stoppage defeat to Tapia's career. Tapia was outmatched and the fight was brought to a halt in round 4 via TKO.
