James Kirkland's debut fight took place on August 2001 when he was 17 years of age. Eromosele Albert was Kirkland's next fight on May 17th, 2008 and also his next win in his career. Kirkland's fight against Eromosele Albert came in the 1st round of a 10 round fight via TKO. Kirkland became the first person to stop Albert. 2 wins followed taking Kirkland's winning streak to 24 wins.
On March 7th, 2009 Kirkland fought and beat Joel Julio (34-2-0) to continue his unbeaten streak. Julio was a worthy challenger but Kirkland was too much and became the first person to stop Julio via TKO during round 6. Kirkland took on another 2 opponents next, racking up wins against Ahsandi Gibbs and Jhon Berrio.
The first defeat of Kirkland's career came against Nobuhiro Ishida on April 9th, 2011. Ishida proved to be too much for Kirkland, destroying him in round 1 via TKO and bringing the first stoppage defeat of Kirkland's career. 4 wins followed where Kirkland went on to be the first to stop Alfredo Angulo, first to stop Alexis Hloros and 4th person to stop Dennis Sharpe.
Glen Tapia was the next fight for Kirkland on December 7th, 2013 and also his next career win. Tapia was stopped in the 6th round via TKO crowning Kirkland as the first person to stop this opponent.
Taking another knock in his career, Kirkland fought Saul Alvarez on May 9th, 2015 and was defeated by Alvarez. Once again Kirkland was in a tough fight, one that proved to be a step too far in Kirkland's latest fight. Opponent Alvarez fought well and was rewarded with a win, and crowned only the 2nd man to stop Kirkland in the process. The fight ended in round 3 via KO.
