Starting his career in October 2000 at the age of 24, orthodox boxer Steve Cunningham has now been pro for 15 years and has built up a career of 28-8-0. Continuing on from his successful debut, Cunningham continued his winning streak by winning his next 18 fights. In this time he fought and beat Guillermo Jones, Sebastiaan Rothmann and Kelvin Davis to name just a few, fighting once in 2000, 10 times in 2001 and 7 times between 2002 and 2005.
The first defeat of Cunningham's career came against Krzysztof Wlodarczyk on November 25th, 2006. This took his career record to 19-1-0. Coming into the fight with high confidence Cunningham fought his next fight against Krzysztof Wlodarczyk on November 25th, 2006. Unfortunately, Cunningham was outclassed and lost the decision on the judges scorecards taking his record to 19-1-0. Cunningham's wins continued and went from 19 wins to 20 after he then defeated Krzysztof Wlodarczyk.
Pushing his career further, Cunningham fought Marco Huck on December 29th, 2007 adding to his winning record. Huck was stopped in the 12th round via TKO crowning Cunningham as the first person to stop this opponent. Fights against boxers Wayne Braithwaite followed taking his record to 22-2-0
Cunningham kept his losses at 2 by beating Troy Ross on June 5th, 2010. Becoming the first person to stop Troy Ross, Cunningham beat Ross via TKO in the 5th round of a 12 round fight.
Cunningham lost to Tyson Fury in his next fight. Taking place on April 20th, 2013, Cunningham's career record after this fight stood at 25-6-0. Cunningham was beaten by Tyson Fury in the 7th round. The win came via KO in the 7th round. This was Cunningham's first stoppage defeat. Fights against Manuel Quezada, Amir Mansour and Natu Visinia followed where he won all 3 fights taking his winning streak to 28 wins.
Cunningham lost to Vyacheslav Glazkov in his next fight. Taking place on March 14th, 2015, Cunningham's career record after this fight stood at 28-7-0. Cunningham boxing ability was put under heavy scrutiny in the Glazkov fight, a test too far for Cunningham as he lost via UD in a judges decision over the 12 round distance.
Taking another knock in his career, Cunningham fought Krzysztof Glowacki on April 16th, 2016 and was defeated by Glowacki. A valiant effort from Cunningham, but one that was out of his reach technically. The fight came to a close after the final bell in a UD loss for Cunningham. A setback for Cunningham pro journey for sure.
